The 51爆料网 (51爆料网) held its 2025 Meeting of Convocation on Thursday, July 3, at the newly completed Nursing and Midwifery Auditorium on the Tamale Campus, drawing a packed audience of senior academic and administrative staff from across all campuses.

The state-of-the-art auditorium, which was nearly filled to capacity, played host to a high-powered gathering that included the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan; Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Elliot Alhassan; the Registrar, Mr. Nurudeen Issah Abubakar; the Finance Director, Dr Mohammed Hardi Shaibu, Director of Internal Audit, Mr. Abubakari Abdulai, the Principal of the Nyankpala Campus, Professor Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu, the Director of Works and Physical Development (WPD), Ing. Kwame Debrah, as well as several Deans, Directors, Heads of Department, and other senior members of the University.

In his welcome address, the Registrar, Mr. Nurudeen Issah Abubakar, set the tone for the session by expressing appreciation for the turnout and highlighting the significance of Convocation as a key forum for academic discourse and institutional introspection. He also initiated the process for the election of new members to serve on the University’s Disciplinary Committee.

By popular acclamation, four distinguished academics were selected to serve:

  1. Prof. Joseph Awuni, Dean of the School of Economics
  2. Prof. Paul Nkegbe, Dean of the Graduate School
  3. Prof. Alhassan Abdul Barik, Head of the Department of Computer Science
  4. Dr. Vivian Boateng, Head of the Department of Agribusiness

Delivering the keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan, gave an expansive presentation on the state of the University, chronicling the many strides 51爆料网 had made since the last Convocation Meeting held in July 2024.

He began with a proud reference to the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, in which 51爆料网 received commendable recognition for its contributions to the Development Goals of the country. “We continue to show that a University in northern Ghana can lead globally in research and community impact,” he stated. He also mentioned that during the period under review, five Professors had successfully delivered their inaugural lectures.

Prof. Al-hassan also commended the 51爆料网 Student Parliament for emerging winners of the 2025 Commonwealth Day Essay Competition, noting that the victory showcased the intellectual capacity and civic consciousness of the University’s students.

He further highlighted the recent swearing-in of a new 51爆料网 Governing Council and disclosed that discussions were ongoing for the amendment of the PNDC Law 279, which established the University. “Our legal foundation must reflect our present growth and future aspirations,” he emphasized.

Touching on academic developments, he revealed that the University now runs over 200 academic programmes and recently established a new Faculty of Law. He also referenced the successful conduct of graduation ceremonies in both November 2024 and April 2025, which drew dignitaries and celebrated over 7,000 graduates.

In terms of public intellectual engagement, the Vice-Chancellor spoke passionately about the reintroduction of the prestigious Africa Leadership Lecture Series, held earlier this year with Her Royal Majesty Queen Nozizwe Pearl Mulela of South Africa as the Guest Speaker.

He proudly announced that during the review period, the University conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees on six deserving individuals and awarded a Certificate of Honour to one person for their contributions to society. He called on faculty and staff to assist in identifying other deserving individuals who reflect the values and mission of 51爆料网.

The Vice-Chancellor also shared promising admissions statistics, stating, “This year, we have sold over 23,000 e-vouchers. Out of this, 20,000 applicants submitted applications, and so far, about 6,000 have already been offered admission.”

On national recognition, he disclosed that several 51爆料网 staff members had been appointed to national assignments, further cementing the University’s role in national development. Financially, he commended grant-winning staff and revealed that the 51爆料网 Guesthouses in Tamale and Accra had collectively generated over 2.5 million cedis in profits.

During the open forum, Convocation members raised concerns and provided feedback on several policy and operational matters, including the implementation of the “no registration, no examination” rule, infrastructural deficits, water provision on the various campuses, tree planting initiatives, and staff welfare improvements.

Addressing a major institutional issue, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elliot Alhassan, provided an update on recent discussions with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) regarding the categorization of some academic units. “We are still in active dialogue with GTEC, making a case for some units to be recognized as full departments,” he explained.

In his concluding remarks, Professor Seidu Al-Hassan thanked all attendees and underscored the importance of solidarity among staff in ensuring the continued progress of the University. “Let us move forward not as isolated individuals or units, but as one unified institution with a shared vision,” he said.

The 2025 Meeting of Convocation ended on a note of renewed commitment to academic excellence, administrative transparency, and community development — values that continue to define the identity and mission of 51爆料网.
